Health Insurance in Switzerland

Health insurance in Switzerland is mandatory and without proper knowledge can be expensive too. This is especially true for the expatriates who do not have enough knowledge of the Swiss health insurance market.

Basic health insurance is mandatory for people who are living in Switzerland for more than three months. The insurance provider can be chosen as per one’s convenience.

How much will be health insurance premium?
The premium of the insurance depends on the place of residence, age and the deductible. The deductible is the amount that you pay for your treatment every year and after this amount insurance company starts to pay out. If someone wants to have lower premium then he can opt for the higher deductible.

How to change deductible and insurer?
If someone wants to change the deductible for one year he can do that at the end of the year. The same rule applies for changing insurance provider. Usually, insurance companies write a letter about the premium for the coming year at around end of October and thus providing time to change the insurance provider by 30th of November.

What is supplementary insurance?
Supplementary insurance covers other services which are not the part of your basic health insurance. Since this insurance is not mandatory, you have to decide whether you want it or not. One example of additional services can be orthodontics treatment for children. Usually, for obtaining supplementary insurance, you have to fill a questionnaire, on basis of which the insurance company decides the premium.
